Can you neatly dread long natural hair?

I was going to grow out my relaxer next new year (1/1/2009) and wait until my natural hair got about shoulder length, can I still dread it, neatly. I know you can neatly dread short natural afro hair and make it look uniformed, what about long natural hair?

needless to say I am chopping them off this weekend

gonna have a hella short cut but

all i can say is they are beautiful but very high maintenance

unless u go for the "un kept" look as I have sported now for 2 years and ready for a change.
