How do I go from fading red hair to my natural colour?

I have spent years dyeing my (naturally mousey blond) hair quite dark shades of red (mahogany, and plum). I decided some months ago that enough was enough and got the red hair covered with a medium brown, plus some highlights to help blend my lighter natural hair as it grew at the root. My regrowth is a couple of inches long now, and I still have some traces of auburn-ish hair throughout, especially at the ends of my hair.

Is it possible to cover up this haircolour once and for all with a natural shade? Will it take the colour, or would I have to lighten all over first?

Wait until your hair grows out enough to get all those ends cut off and still be able to style it to your liking.

In the meantime you should try temporary rinses that will match the ENDS of your hair. The darker ends will NOT accept a light temporary color.

That way your hair will be a bit more uniform in color, until you get a haircut.

You can go to 5 different salons and get 5 different answers. your best bet is to trim off the ends to minimalize the red as much as possible. Or you can just keep highlighting the red little by little until it is gone. I go to Sally's beauty supplies, they have products that washout after about 6 shappoos, this way you don't have a permanant commitment. I love it.
