Does African-American hair that is worn in its natural state shed more than processed hair?

I have neem wearing my hair natural for a little over a year, and I have noticed that when I comb my hair after washing it, I am losing a LOT of hair. Well, it seems like a lot on the comb, but it's not noticable in my hair. Does natural hair shed more than processed hair? And if so, why?

It can be more prone to breakage/shedding when natural so try to wear lots of protective styles (2 strand twists, wash n go, flat twists, braids) and manipulate your hair as little as possible.

When you comb/detangle always use a WIDE tooth comb or a Denman detangling brush when your hair is full of conditioner and dripping wet.

Also try to band your hair to stretch it out overnight (put it in large/chunky 2 strand twists or braids) then take it down the next day for maximum stretch/length without the pull of the comb/brush.

I do not think natural hair shed more it just may be more noticeable. Ive been through both and there is no difference

well, all women lose about 100 strands or pieces of hair on average a day. However, African American women tend to have dryer hair due to our kinkier hair follicles; and whether we wear it processes or natural, we tend to lose many hairs, but as long as it's not huge clumps or noticeable, it's fine. It may be the way you comb it, try starting from the root and combing slowly through to the end...however, since you wear your hair natural, you really shouldn't need to comb it all that much. Just remember to keep you hair (and body) hydrated, and everything should be great!

Hi. Im an African American Female and i noticed that no matter if my hair is natural or processed if my hair is "nappy" it will come out on my comb.

I think if ur hair is relaxed it might come out less because its not as nappy and with less tangles. But if u come ur hair on a regular basis and keep it tangle free, you shouldnt lose as much hair.

If u still keep shedding i would suggest combing ur hair with ALOT of CONDITIONER in it. The comb will run right through ur hair and doesnt hurt when u comb it.

Good luck!

Mine does when I have it natural because it is too kinky to comb easily. Try deep conditioning every week. That helped me. Sometimes natural hair is even more dry and brittle than chemically processed hair (go figure!) and needs extra attention. My hairdresser friend said that sometimes it's a phase and stops after a few weeks but that I should keep conditioning anyway. She also said that daily or weekly shedding is natural and if you are not actually getting bald spots then it may be just the natural process. New hairs grow in as the older ones fall out.

I am a white woman but, I want to say I like the look of African American women or men when they wear their hair natural. I don't know about shedding, I just think the natural style looks better because that's how you were intended to look. God is a good designer isn't he?

i think natural hair does shed more than processed hair because ive been trying to let my relaxer in my hair grow out and become all natural and my hair has been sheding more and i think thats because half of my hair is natural.
