Question about "natural" hair, you know, so you never have to wash it?

Have you heard about letting your hair go "natural" - apparently if you don't wash it for about ten weeks then all the dirt %26amp; grease (of which there's a lot at this point) falls out, and you never have to use shampoo ever again.

First of all, is this true? A friend said it was a myth. Do you *directly* know anyone who's done this, and it's worked?

Second, I have long hair at the moment, but am thinking of shaving it all off. If I get rid of all of it - you know, use a razor on my scalp - and then stop using shampoo, will it be in this "natural" state as it grows back, so that I won't have to put up with ten weeks of my hair feeling dirty?

First of all, don't shave off your long hair before you're ABSOLUTELY sure. I cut off my semi-long hair off back to an inch and I regreted it.

But to get to your actual question - I don't think it's a myth, but I think it doesn't work as well for everyone. Or maybe it would, but the time it takes for your hair to realise it's not going to be washed can vary greatly. You should check out The Long Hair Community (just google it), there's a LOT of information on natural hair care etc :)

myth. your hair does not self clean itself.. would you stop brushing your teeth for ten weeks.. probably not.

How stupid are you? It's not truee! Think about it..Is there any scientifical explanation of how that copuld happen?!

Question about "natural" hair, you know, so you never have to wash it?

Nah, myth i reckon.

It is true that your hair has natural oils and u shouldnt wash ur hair everyday coz it washes the oils away and ends up making it get greasy quicker, couple times a week is good.

But if u just left it for that long, itd be pretty nasty, Fink of guys wiv dreds...their hair stinks!! N memba when Bob Marley RIP died they found hundreds of species of lice and bugs n stuff!!

eeew, would not want to see that. I will say this my dog gets a bath because her hair does not clean itself so stands to reason yours won't either

I just can't see it being clean.....you naturally sweat and there's only one way to get rid of that......that's by washing.

Question about "natural" hair, you know, so you never have to wash it?

Not true. I had dreads for a while, trust that dreads are NOT easier maintanence that keeping it clean and combed. I would never try it again and have a completely different view of dreads and those that have them after having them myself. Your hair does not produce or stop producing oils, your scalp does and then it moves down the hair shaft. The dirt is then attracted to the oils. Then there is the dead skin from your scalp that collects making a disgusting concoction. Even most dreadies wash their hair occasionally sometimes using rosemary or other tinctures to deal with the itch and stink.

My English Teacher from school did this when she went to Ethiopia as part of a charity program. As there was a shortage of water in the village she was helping, she could not wash her hair and went for an entire seven weeks without washing her hair. She wore it in a headscarf the entire time.

She told me just as she had arrived back did the hair "start" to look clean , however it smelled absolutely horrendous, and its texture was incredibly greasy from nearly the root to the ends and it was virtually unstyleable.

You have to be are that if you are going to do this with your hair, it will be hard to style (if you're the kind of person who likes your hair a certain way), it WILL stink (because your hair absorbs the smell of every atmosphere you're in), and it WILL itch like crazy after a while, as your scalp won't be getting washed, the skin won't be flaking off to let new skin grow through and it will become irritated.

Is there a particular reason you want natural hair? Is it for the condition or is it to save the environment by one less person using a shampoo using chemicals and plastic bottles?

That is a myth. You can go natural by not using shampoos anymore. You actually shouldnt shampoo your hair, it just makes the scalp itchy and it washes out the natural oils.

Baking soda is the best natural shampoo, dilute about two table spoons into 1 cup of warm water and pour over your head. Let this sit for a few minutes then rise it out. Use a natural conditioner and then rinse with ACV(apple cidar vinegar). This method cleans the scalp just as good as any shampoo without the harsh chemical that dry out the hair.

You can even opt to use no shampooing method at all, just rinse under warm water and massage your scalp with the balls of your fingers to loosen the dirt then rinse it out. I haven't used shampoo in 2 weeks and my hair actually feels a lot better, fuller, and its a little shinier with all of the natural oils.

years ago I saw a tv programme where a lady had done this, or claimed to have done it. She had really long dark hair and it looked great and she said it was vile and smelly and then started cleaning itself, not sure how true it is but I wouldnt risk it personally . Id ask a professional.
